As I’ve told you in one of the first diaries, I never really wanted to be an architect, or so I thought. I’ve been reflecting on this story I tell myself and others. It’s true that I always felt something was off during university, that I couldn’t quite relate, that I was not made for that way of doing things. But maybe I was made for architecture, but not in the way they told me that I should do it.

I remember coming across Frank Lloyd Wright in basic school, and the beautiful building that made me fall in love with buildings in the first place. Falling Water. A house built over a waterfall that made me feel something before I had the words for why.

Maybe it was there all along. But with a different shape, that took me a few years to find. I guess little moments shaped my vision. From that first encounter, to my last year of architecture school, where I found Jan Gehl, an architect who spent years in Italy watching how people use public spaces.

To the present moment. How can we design spaces without actually thinking about the ones that will live, play, work, learn in them? This question gained roots in my head, and made me look, learn, read, research.

Spaces affect how we feel: physically, mentally, emotionally. The air, the temperature, the light. But also the colours, the objects, the way a room is organised. It’s not mystical. It’s documented, researched, real.

Behestia exists to be the translator. To show you what your space is doing to you right now.

Learning Python and SQL this year was supposed to help me transition into tech, leave architecture behind once and for all. But two months in, I realised I don’t have the temperament to code all day or manage data every week. What I really wanted was to build something, and fortunately we live in this moment where you don’t need to become a developer to create.

So I dove into AI tools, which sounds straightforward until you realize there are hundreds of them, each promising to be exactly what you need. The abundance is both liberating and paralysing - you can prototype anything, but you can also spend weeks just choosing your stack. I went with what seemed logical: V0 for the website, Vercel for deployment, Supabase and Railway for the backend pieces, Claude for intelligence.

Since the idea was still abstract in my head, and having never done this before, I started with what I now recognise as my natural approach - a messy all-at-the-same-time method. Create a landing page without a product, use Claude to think about the end product without starting anything, explore an MVP without knowing how or what it should be. Go back and forth between grand visions of what this could become and the immediate reality of ‘but what does the first screen actually look like?’ Map the metrics without knowing how to measure them, design user flows for products that don’t exist yet, imagine the business model while still figuring out the core value proposition.

V0 seemed perfect for someone visual like me who needed to see ideas taking shape. I jumped in, burned through the free trial in about an hour, immediately subscribed to monthly credits, and kept building. I was getting somewhere with a workspace-focused landing page when V0 started behaving strangely. It would make changes that broke the logic we’d established, create versions I couldn’t preview, lose track of what we were building. I actually had to request a credit refund because the tool was malfunctioning

That forced a month-long pause while waiting for credits to renew, and honestly, it was exactly what I needed. During that waiting period, I kept researching, kept thinking, and started questioning whether workspaces were even the right starting point. That’s when I realised what became the insight for Diário #3 - maybe this should be about places where health conversations already exist, where people already expect their environment to impact how they feel. Homes, gyms, spas. Not offices where everything has to be justified through productivity metrics.

When my V0 credits renewed, I approached it completely differently. I mapped a strategy with Claude to be more deliberate with every prompt, focused on homes instead of workplaces, and it worked better. But I still ran out of credits before finishing, which led to this moment of clarity: why am I fighting V0 when it’s just using Claude anyway? I downloaded the code, switched to Claude Code in VS Code, and simplified everything down to Claude + Claude Code + Vercel. Done. Well, almost done - I’d lose V0’s instant visual previews, but I’d gain full control over the code. I’m still figuring out that part, honestly.

What I wasn’t expecting was how much those constraints taught me. When you’re limited - on credits, on tools, on complexity - you stop chasing perfect solutions and start focusing on what actually matters. You don’t need elaborate tech stacks or to follow what everyone else is building. Sometimes not knowing the “right” way becomes an advantage because you find approaches that work better for your specific situation.

But the technical journey was only half of what was evolving. While wrestling with platforms and credits, I kept thinking about what this should actually feel like to use. Sure, the MVP would measure air quality, CO2, humidity, temperature, light, PM2.5 - the standard metrics that sensors already track. But I didn’t want another app that shows you numbers without context. There’s a huge difference between knowing your CO2 is at 900ppm and understanding why your focus disappeared at 3 PM.

I kept imagining people programming their spaces like they program their bodies with fitness trackers. I want you to feel like you’re talking with your house, programming it for the tasks you’re going to do inside. Going to sleep? Let your bedroom prepare for that, from air quality to light. Working? Transform it into a focus area. Connecting with others? Make it comfortable for that.

And then, drawing on what I already knew about how humans respond to environmental changes, I realised I wanted technology that communicates more like nature does - through gentle shifts and intuitive signals, not harsh alerts screaming “CO2 HIGH” in red text. How do you make tech feel more human? That led me to biomimetic design approaches, this idea of technology that mirrors natural communication patterns.

I’m launching a landing page in the coming weeks because I genuinely believe this interconnected vision - spaces that adapt, communicate naturally, and turn data into human insight - could change how we think about our indoor lives. I want to know: does this resonate with you? Would you want your home to work with you like this?

É o meio onde me especializei, onde faço consultoria, onde conheço os problemas intimamente. É também onde está a maior parte da ciência que sustenta esta ideia; os estudos sobre qualidade do ar, cognição, bem-estar, foram feitos maioritariamente em contexto de ambientes de trabalho.

O espaço de trabalho era, na minha mente, o ponto de partida óbvio.

No entanto, ao longo do processo, ao tentar encaixá-la nos espaços de escritório como existem hoje, a ideia foi-se desfazendo. A saúde saiu. O bem-estar ficou em segundo plano.

O foco desviou-se para métricas ambientais, compliance, legislativas europeias. Coisas importantes, mas que não eram o que eu queria construir. Quando olhei para o que tinha nas mãos, já não reconhecia a ideia inicial.

E isto abriu uma nova questão. E se o Behestia (ainda) não for para espaços de trabalho?

Um ginásio vende saúde e performance. Mas o próprio espaço não mede absolutamente nada. As pessoas chegam com os seus Apple Watch, WHOOP, Oura Rings, Garmin, a monitorizar tudo - frequência cardíaca, calorias, VO₂ max - mas o ambiente onde estão a fazer esforço físico fica esquecido. O ar, a temperatura, a humidade durante o treino.

E acreditem que há ginásios, demasiados ginásios, com problemas de humidade, cheios de mofo. É o contra senso total: vais para um sítio melhorar a tua saúde, e estás literalmente a abrir o pulmão ao máximo num dos ambientes interiores menos saudáveis que frequentas.

Um spa controla temperatura e humidade por intuição e experiência acumulada. Sabe que a sauna deve estar a X graus, que a sala de relaxamento precisa de determinadas condições. Mas não tem dados que confirmem se essas condições estão realmente a funcionar como deviam, se estão alinhadas com o propósito de regeneração que vende.

Um hotel cinco estrelas cobra centenas de euros pela experiência. Mas não tem forma de garantir que o quarto 312 tem as condições para que o hóspede descanse como promete no website.

E depois temos as nossas casas.

Think of everything you do to lead a healthy lifestyle. You may pay attention to what you eat and how much you exercise. But have you ever seriously given much thought to the one place in the world where you spend 1/3 of your life?

Passamos 1/3 da nossa vida no quarto... 35% dos adultos reportam sono insuficiente... Mas quantos alguma vez mediram a qualidade do ar do quarto onde tentam dormir? Corpos fechados durante oito horas, CO₂ a acumular, humidade, ventilação zero. É o espaço onde vais para recuperar, e é onde as condições ambientais podem estar piores.

Isto fez-me pensar na história do WHOOP. Não começaram a tentar convencer tudo e todos de que monitorizar saúde fazia sentido. Focaram-se em atletas, pessoas que já estavam focadas na sua performance, recuperação, nos dados do seu próprio corpo. E só depois expandiram para todos nós que queremos otimizar como dormimos, como recuperamos, como treinamos.

O mercado certo não é necessariamente o maior. É o que já está pronto para a conversa. E nestes espaços - ginásio, spa, hotel, casa - o ambiente como fator de saúde e bem-estar não são uma conversa de futuro. Já são parte da premissa.

O Behestia pode chegar aos escritórios. Acredito que chegará. Mas talvez o caminho seja por aqui primeiro, por espaços que já dizem “este ambiente foi pensado para a tua saúde”.

Assim, o Behestia tem como objetivo tornar-se o WHOOP para os edifícios. Para os 90% da vida que vivemos dentro de espaços. Para o que ninguém estava a prestar atenção até agora.

Se isto vai ser possível de formalizar eu não sei. Se é uma ideia demasiado (ou pouco) ambiciosa também não tenho noção. Mas é algo que genuinamente me entusiasma.

Espero no próximo diário partilhar um pouco mais sobre as métricas que estou a pensar incorporar, e sobre a jornada de criar um MVP (produto mínimo viável) usando AI. Sim, tenho-me divertido nos bastidores a pensar, criar, explorar e quero partilhar tudo por aqui.

No diário anterior escrevi sobre o porquê. Hoje quero escrever sobre o caminho até aqui.

A ideia de construir um Building Doctor não tem uma semana, nem meses, tem, na verdade, anos. No meu primeiro contacto com a NeuroArquitetura e a Psicologia Ambiental eu sabia que havia algo ali para mim. E esse algo levou-me a entrar num PhD: uma vontade de perceber mais sobre o impacto do ambiente construído no ser humano, de querer explorar mais.

No entanto, esse PhD nunca se concluiu. Foi um ano de investigação, leitura, conversas, para perceber que o caminho não era por ali, que o formato não era aquele.

Desde então, essa ideia ficou dormente. Fui acumulando mais conhecimento, mais fontes, mais perguntas, mais conexões. Antes de existir um conceito com forma, existiram muitos ficheiros de Excel, mapas de ideias, brainstormings, folhas coladas nas paredes.

O que seria isto? Para quem? Que métricas estamos a medir? É uma consultoria, uma app, uma investigação académica? Onde andam as certificações? As legislações que nos falam disto?

Vieram comparações com o que já existe no mercado: o que andam a fazer, como medem, o que medem, e porquê.

Foram vários planos, vários conceitos, vários nomes. Mas o conceito sempre teve um fio condutor, uma frase que me impactou desde o primeiro momento:

Building Engineers and Facilities Managers are true heroes of our health. The people who manage your building have a greater impact on your health than your doctor.

E porquê? Passamos 90% do nosso tempo dentro de edifícios. Há quem nos considere uma espécie interior. Sabemos, pela neurociência, pela psicologia ambiental e até pela epigenética ambiental, que o ambiente que nos rodeia impacta grandemente a nossa saúde. Então porque não pensamos, construímos e mantemos os edifícios em alinhamento com esse saber?

O conceito do Building Doctor surgiu daqui: do edifício como um ponto de proximidade, com grande influência na nossa saúde e bem-estar, com métricas e um pulsar que pode ser medido e transformado em informação útil sobre a qual podemos atuar.

Da qualidade do ar e da água, ao conforto térmico, acústico e iluminação, tudo isto são métricas que podem ser medidas e que foram estudadas como tendo impacto real.

A ciência que sustenta a ideia

Sabiam que ocupantes em edifícios com boa qualidade do ar interior tiveram scores cognitivos até 101% mais altos do que em edifícios convencionais? É o que mostra o COGfx Study da Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health - um dos estudos mais citados na área.

Ou que trabalhadores em edifícios com certificação ambiental reportam 26% mais função cognitiva e 30% menos dores de cabeça? É o que concluiu o World Green Building Council em 2014.

E ainda: níveis de CO₂ acima de 1.000 ppm, comuns em salas de reunião cheias, já afetam significativamente a tomada de decisão. Satish et al. (2012) demonstraram isso em condições controladas. O ar que respiramos dentro de um edifício não é neutro. Nunca foi.

O Building Doctor agora tem um nome: Behestia.

Héstia era a deusa do lar, do fogo doméstico, do espaço que acolhe. Não a mais famosa do Olimpo, mas talvez a mais essencial. Sem ela, não há casa. Sem qualidade do ambiente interior, não há espaço que funcione de verdade.

Estes anos serviram para perceber o que a Behestia quer ser: não mais um dashboard de métricas, mas uma plataforma que transforma dados em prescrições. Que diz ao gestor o que fazer, não só o que está a acontecer. Que dá ao ocupante uma linguagem para perceber porque é que às 15h o foco desaparece.

A ideia maturou. Os planos existem.

O Diário #1 chegou num momento de ação, quando a construção começa, mas o trabalho já tinha iniciado há muito. Este é esse antes.

Desde 2009 que me questiono: e se tivesse escolhido Engenharia Informática em vez de Arquitetura?

Durante anos, essa pergunta ficou guardada. Fiz o meu caminho pela arquitectura, pela sustentabilidade, pelos edifícios. Trabalhei em Londres, aprendi o que é um edifício sustentável, o que significa WELL, Neuroarquitetura, o impacto no ambiente, o que a qualidade do ar faz às pessoas que trabalham num espaço.

Mas a pergunta nunca foi embora.

Em Londres, num projeto com poucos recursos, tive a oportunidade de construir soluções com o que tinha. Zapier, automações, IA. E algo que estava adormecido acordou, a lógica, os sistemas, a vontade de construir. Com o regresso a Portugal, decidi dedicar os primeiros seis meses de 2026 a estudar Python, SQL, Prompt Engineering. Não por obrigação. Por genuína curiosidade.

E com essa decisão vieram as ideias.

A resposta veio de alguma forma até mim, não é sobre um ou outro. É sobre Arquitetura & Engenharia Informática. É sobre unir dois mundos que me são muito próximos. É sobre o impacto do ambiente na saúde do ocupante e na saúde do planeta. A base é sempre a mesma, as ferramentas é que vão evoluindo.

Há muitas ferramentas que medem edifícios. Medem CO₂, temperatura, qualidade do ar. Geram relatórios, pontos para certificações, dashboards. Mas nenhuma me diz o que realmente quero saber: este espaço está a afetar a minha capacidade de pensar?

Há uma diferença enorme entre uma métrica e um resultado. Saber que o CO₂ está a 900ppm é uma métrica. Perceber que o teu foco caiu a pique às 15h por causa disso, isso é um resultado.

O Whoop fez isso para o corpo humano. O Building Doctor quer fazer isso para os edifícios.

Não tenho tudo definido. Não sei exactamente como vou construir isto, nem quanto tempo vai demorar. Mas decidi fazê-lo em público, partilhar o processo, os erros, as dúvidas, as descobertas.

Este é o primeiro diário. Haverá mais.
